How to sell at auction

House clearances

Consign your items

Once you’ve had your item(s) valued, you may wish to consign them for sale. In order to do this you will be issued with a personal account number by which all of your items will be tracked. Whether you’re submitting a single item or the entire contents of a house clearance, you will be provided with a receipt for all items, on the reverse of which are listed our full terms and conditions. You can also set a reserve price for each lot at this point, which means that the auctioneer will not sell the item for less than this set value.

Please note that all items consigned will be subject to the following standard charges:

  • For Home, Garden and Collectors’ Sales: £3.00 per lot and a commission of 18% is charged on the sale hammer price.
  • Fine Art & Specialist Sales: £6.00 per lot, and a commission of 16% is charged on the sale hammer price.
  • Electrical PAT testing is required for all electrical items submitted for sale at a charge of £1.50 per item.

Our charges above are subject to VAT at the standard rate.

We do not charge extra fees for storage, insurance, cataloguing or photographs.

Reserves and estimates

Once consigned for sale, items will be entered in the next suitable sale.

You will receive an email notification ahead of the sale in which your items are entered, along with details of any guide and reserve prices This gives you the opportunity to review your items ahead of the sale and set a reserve should you wish.

Catalogues

All items consigned for sale will be listed with a description in the catalogue for the relevant sale. In the case of Fine Art and Specialist Collectors’ auctions, the online catalogues are illustrated with photographs of each lot, and also show an estimated guide price. All Cuttlestones’ auction catalogues are available either to view online or download. Text-only printed copies are available on the viewing day and the day of the sale.

Marketing

Cuttlestones auctions are extensively advertised in the local press, national antiques publications and online to help ensure that the broadest possible audience is reached. Our catalogues are sent out to our extensive database of clients via email and published on social media.

Payment

Final payment is made directly to the vendor by electronic transfer or post within 21 days following the date of sale. All charges are plus VAT at the standard rate. If your items do not sell, you usually have the option to collect them or re-enter them in the next suitable sale.
