Football fans dreaming of England’s glory days will want to keep Thursday 12th March firmly in their diaries, as Staffordshire auction house Cuttlestones’ Specialist Collectors Auction will include an exceptional line-up of pre and post-war football memorabilia.
Perhaps the most exciting of around 25 carefully curated lots is what can only be described as a true piece of footballing history – a 1966 World Cup Final programme for the historic England v West Germany match. Signed by ten of the England squad who played that day at Wembley, alongside manager Sir Alf Ramsey and then Prime Minister Harold Wilson, this is a truly generation-defining piece of history.

Equally eye-catching is a Tottenham Hotspur vs Wolverhampton Wanderers 1921 FA Cup Final programme – signed by the entire Spurs team and their manager. Such early 20th century programmes are increasingly scarce, particularly examples so well autographed.

Collectors of club football memorabilia will also be drawn to an impressive run material relating to local side Wolverhampton Wanderers, including:

  • Everton v Wolves programmes from the 1904/05 and 1905/06 seasons
  • Arsenal v Wolves programmes spanning 1935/36 to 1938/39
  • Everton v Wolves programmes from 1920/21 through to 1938/39, including an example signed by Tommy Lawton
  • Chelsea v Wolves programmes from the 1936/37 and 1937/38 seasons

Further highlights include complete folders of Wolves home and away programmes from the 1949/50 and 1950/51 seasons, containing autographs from Roy Swinbourne, Stanley Matthews, Dennis Compton, Ronnie Allen and Peter Broadbent.

In addition to local interest, International material is well represented in this collection. Programmes from the 1958 World Cup (including Brazil fixtures), the 1954 Brazil v Hungary quarter-final, Northern Ireland v West Germany (signed by Peter McParland), Hungary v Wales – Wales’ first ever World Cup match – and the 1937 Scotland v England British Home Championship at Hampden Park – notable for its record European international crowd of over 149,000 – will all go under the hammer.

The full catalogue, complete with descriptions, photographs and estimates, will available to view online via the Cuttlestones website – www.cuttlestones.co.uk – from the Friday prior to the sale.

Viewing will take place at the Penkridge saleroom on Wednesday 11th March (10am–4pm) and again on the morning of the sale, Thursday 12th March (9am–10am). Free parking is available adjacent to the saleroom.
