Seeing double at Stafford Half Marathon? Second Ben Gamble to take on running challenge in name of charity

Posted on

Local auctioneer, Ben Gamble, has more to live up to then most when he takes part in his first Stafford Half Marathon (SHM) later this year in aid of Katherine House Hospice. While most entrants will be hoping to set a personal best, Ben is unlucky enough to be competing in the shadow of his illustrious namesake who just happens to be a three-time former winner of the event!

Stone-based athlete, Ben Gamble, of Tipton Harriers athletics club, is a seasoned competitor at race events across Staffordshire and the Midlands, and has an enviable record at SHM – finishing over four minutes clear of his nearest rival when he last won back in 2013. Whilst ‘auctioneer Ben’ is unlikely to be challenging for the crown of Stafford’s fastest man this year, spectators and commentators may find it confusing on the day to see the name Ben Gamble featured simultaneously amongst the front runners and in the chasing pack.
As a keen golfer and former Sunday morning footballer, Ben is no stranger to competition, however, and is taking on the challenge in order to raise money for Katherine House Hospice – a charity he has long supported through his business, as he explains:
It’s a bit of a poisoned chalice sharing a name with Ben, as he has an incredible record. Put it like this: I don’t think I’ll be giving him much cause for concern in terms of placing, but I’m very competitive by nature and it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time so I’m determined to give it my all and finish in the best possible time.
On a serious note, I hope I can raise as much money as possible for Katherine House Hospice by competing this year. It really is a fantastic cause and one I’ve been proud to support for some time now. A couple of years ago some colleagues and I attempted the Three Peaks challenge to help support KHH and I’m hoping to top the total we managed to raise that year. In the meantime, I’d better get some training in!
