Sale report: Penkridge Antiques & Interiors – Wed 10th Feb 2021

Boasting strong gold and silver sections, our Wednesday 10th February auction drew shrewd bidders seeking a sound investment in troubled times. Other sections also showed some pretty impressive performances, with just a handful of items unsold from a catalogue of almost 1,000 lots.

It seems the media storm surrounding Reddit users moving from Gamestop Shares to invest in silver is having an impact on the market. We are already seeing the effects, with silver prices in the saleroom particularly strong; the highlight of the section being Lot 442 – an Australian 2007 Kookaburra $30 pure silver 1kg coin, in original box with certificate, which fetched £800. Gold bullion also performed especially well; generating a lot of interest among bidders on the internet (see highlights below).

The trend for traditional chinaware seems to be continuing, with Royal Albert’s Old Country Roses proving particularly popular. There also seems to have been something of a revival for green & black Wedgwood Jasperware – which would have been lucky to achieve a couple of quid an item until recently – so this will be worth keeping an eye on in coming months. The American appetite for 1980s Brambly Hedge by Jill Barklam ceramics show no sign of waning; with a collection that went under the hammer in this week’s sale bringing in the bids and eventually selling for £300.

Another trend hailing from the 20th C is mid-century modern furniture, with bidders not only clamouring for lots by big names such as Ercol and G-Plan, but also competing for un-branded furniture in similar style. People also seem willing to pay good money in the search for quality sound systems from across the generations, as they maybe rediscover their back catalogue of LPs, CDs and other formats.

It’s not just vintage homeware that’s enjoying a renaissance – vintage clothing showed some strong performances, with a surprise winning bid of £85 on a collection of approx. 60 vintage sewing patterns. The warm, nostalgic glow seemed to stretch to vintage toys and ceramic linked to childhood themes, with Disney collectable figures and Thomas the Tank Engine Toys both performing well.
