Piece of Penkridge policing history to go under hammer at local auction next week

Posted on

A pair of Victorian Staffordshire Police ledgers relating to the borough of Penkridge are set to sell at Penkridge auction house Cuttlestones’ Autumn Antiques and Collectables Auction on Thursday 14th September.

Local history buffs are sure to be keen to get their hands on the tomes which, dating from 1899 and 1901 respectively, offer a glimpse into life in Penkridge at the dawn on the 20th century. Many of the entries relate to Lord Hatherton, who owned the Teddesley estate as 'the Magistrate before whom the charge is brought', alongside mentions of many locations that will be familiar to those with a knowledge of the local area. The thorough record of crimes and arrests in the area not only make fascinating reading but are aesthetically pleasing – courtesy of the ornate copperplate handwriting. Also included within the lot is a post-war ‘Personal Diary No.9’ recording the daily patrol / duties of two constables from Penkridge station.

MD and head auctioneer, Ben Gamble, says: “We always love it when lots with local provenance come into the sale room – and you don’t get much more local than this! The ledgers make interesting – and entertaining – reading as they detail crimes, arrests and punishments at a time when Penkridge was a bustling country market town. We anticipate strong interest from those with an eye for local history and also collectors of policing memorabilia.”

The lot is one of over 700 set to go under the hammer at Cuttlestones’ Pinfold Lane saleroom next Thursday with a diverse range of items represented – including antique furniture, paintings, ceramics, jewellery, silver, comic books, toys, vintage vehicles and more.

The auction will take place on Thursday 14th September 2023. Viewing will take place on Wednesday 13th September and on the morning of the sale.
