A Staffordshire auction house resurrected a centuries-old rivalry last week, with coins dating from the respective reins of Lord Protectorate Oliver Cromwell and his adversary King Charles II going ‘head to head’ under the hammer.
We are fielding a diverse catalogue for its forthcoming Fine Art auction next Friday, 3rd June. Among the usual high quality artworks, antique furniture, decorative ceramics, silver and fine jewellery are some more unusual lots – most notably some extremely rare coins dating from civil war period, and two classic cars.
An extensive collection of Charles Dickens’ novels – including several first and numerous early editions – achieved £15,825, excluding buyers’ commission, when it went under the hammer at a West Midlands auction house earlier this month.
The private collection was entered into Cuttlestones’ Friday 6th May Specialist Collectors’ Sale in Wolverhampton; drawing specialist dealers and collectors from across the country into the sale room and attracting worldwide bids via the internet.

The first Fine Art sale of Cuttlestones’ 2016 calendar on Friday, 11th March produced a number of standout lots, with jewellery and oriental ware items performing very strongly. Featuring the usual plethora of antiques and collectables – including vintage clothing and accessories, silver, watches, coins, ceramics, glass, oriental ware, clocks, furniture, and pretty much everything else in between – the auction proved a great success across the board. UK and international buyers made their presence felt via the internet and telephone lines, in addition to those present in the room on the day.
With 2016 off to a flying start, the Cuttlestones team continues to grow with the appointment of a new specialist to our eight-strong team of valuers.
