Cuttlestones bolsters team with appointment of new specialist valuer

Posted on

With 2016 off to a flying start, the Cuttlestones team continues to grow with the appointment of a new specialist to our eight-strong team of valuers.

Roy Stokes, who hails from the Black Country, will specialise in the identification and valuation of collectables including toys, trains, postcards and other ephemera. A keen collector himself – with interests in diecast toys, slot cars, military badges, medals and old post cards – Roy has worked for several local auction houses over the past 20 years, following a 27 year career in the Wills and Trusts Department at Barclays Bank.

His experience has made him adept at spotting potentially valuable lots amid both house clearance items and those bought in to the auction room for valuation. His work at Cuttlestones has already made something of a splash, with a collection of toy soldiers he valued ahead of the firm’s last Specialist Collectors’ Sale in November selling for over £5,800.

Roy’s appointment is a natural step for the auction house, with the increasing success of our Wolverhampton-based Specialist Collectors’ Sales attracting the consignment of more and more items of niche interest for sale.

MD and Head Auctioneer, Ben Gamble, says:

“Roy is a great addition to the team; bringing with him a wealth of experience. We already have specialist valuers in the fields of furniture, ceramics, paintings, coins, medals, militaria, silver, books, maps, printed ephemera, stamps, sporting memorabilia, jewellery, vintage textiles, costumes and clocks – so Roy’s knowledge will be invaluable as we have seen a sharp increase in the amount of toys being bought into the sale room.

“This is due, in the main, to the growing popularity of our Wolverhampton Specialist Collectors’ Sales which, alongside the quarterly Fine Art Auctions at Penkridge now attract a global marketplace of both vendors and bidders courtesy of live internet bidding. This means we can really punch above our weight as a provincial auction house and reach audiences that at one time only the big International auction houses could have hoped to target.”

Of his recent appointment, Roy says:

“I’m delighted to be a part of the Cuttlestones team and be stationed for regular valuations at the Wolverhampton Sale Rooms – it’s always exciting to see what will come through the door next. As a particular fan of slot cars, including Scalextric, Minic, TCR, Victory and a few others, it would be great to see some especially rare, older examples in good – ideally boxed – condition come in for valuation!”
