‘Not your average concert posters’ at upcoming Collectors auction

Posted on

Cuttlestones Auctioneers will feature a blast from the past at its upcoming Collectors' Sale on 5th July, in the form of two concert posters – one for an early-1970s performance in Bromsgrove by the Average White Band, the other for the 1974 Wolves Polytechnic annual ball.

With the Average White Band set to embark on a nationwide tour which will see them play the Royal Albert Hall on 1st July this year and Birmingham Town Hall on 25th September, this is a timely opportunity for fans and collectors to own a unique piece of the band's history.

Designed in the psychedelic acid-rock stylings of the era, the posters are in great condition and in addition to the Average White Band, feature appearances by Home Frupp, Blackfoot Sue and the Flying Hat Band (the latter being the early band of one Glenn Tipton, of later Judas Priest fame) at the Polytech ball. Cuttlestones’ saleroom manager, Rosie Blackburn, comments on the unusual pieces:

“These posters represent a rare opportunity for collectors, or even someone from the local area that attended the shows in question – they were consigned by a vendor from Durham so in effect the posters are ‘coming home’ to be sold. It’s a nice coincidence that the Average White Band are still going strong and currently on tour, though the cost of a ticket today is slightly more than the 25p it cost back then!”

The lot is expected to fetch between £30-50, and will come under the hammer at Cuttlestones’ Specialist Collectors' Sale at Wolverhampton Auction Rooms on Friday 5th July. The fully illustrated catalogue will be available online via and viewing will take place from 10am – 7pm on Thursday 4th July and on the morning of the sale. For those not able to bid in person, live online, telephone and commission bidding options are available.
