Modern World and European football memorabilia set for Midlands auction

Cuttlestones’ Tom Waldron with a selection of lots from the collection

Sporting memorabilia is always a popular section at West Midlands auction house Cuttlestones’ Specialist Collectors’ Auctions; with football related items from the early to mid 20th Century generating a lot of interest. However, something rather more unusual is set to come under the hammer at the Wolverhampton sale rooms this August – in the form of a single, impressive collection of items relating to World and European club football during football during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Featuring trophies, signed posters, banners, footballs, shirts, medals, programmes, press badges, security passes, stickers and a host of other merchandise, all items in the collection are linked to a company called ‘The International Event Partnership’ which organised pre-season tournaments for some of the world’s most renowned teams – such as Manchester United, F.C. Barcelona, Arsenal, and AC Milan, to name just a few.

These tournaments took place throughout the world and much of the unique ephemera and memorabilia that was commissioned for production by the teams involved will be on offer in the upcoming sale, including items signed by some the era’s greatest players.

One of the most interesting is a hallmarked solid silver presentation trophy, featuring a central ornamental canon and weighing 711 grams, presented by Arsenal FC in recognition of the Amsterdam Tournament in 2000. Expected to achieve anywhere between £200-400 this lot epitomises the bespoke nature of the collection; which features items of a kind very rarely found on the open market.

Among several other trophies on offer is a hallmarked Italian solid silver trophy presented by Parma A.C. to commemorate the 2002 Amsterdam Tournament. Guided at £100-200, it features a colour enamel club emblem and is engraved with the names of the other competing teams, namely Manchester United, Ajax and F.C. Barcelona.

These highlight lots are set to sell alongside a considerable hoard of signed posters, banners, footballs and shirts from some of the world class players who competed at these events; representing an extremely rare opportunity, as Cuttlestones’ Tom Waldron explains:

We’re used to seeing early and mid-20th Century football memorabilia cause a stir among collectors, but such a haul of modern ephemera is unusual. The fact that the matches, teams and players featured will be well within living memory for the majority of fans could well broaden the appeal of this beyond the hardcore football memorabilia collector community. It’s a very interesting collection and, as a football fan, it’s been fascinating to lot – featuring many of the teams and players that were at the pinnacle of the International game when I was growing up.”

The lots will come under the hammer on Friday, 15th August at Wolverhampton Auction Rooms as part of the Specialist Collectors’ Sale. The full catalogue will be available online from Friday, 8th August and with telephone, commission and live online bidding options available for remote bidders, the sale is expected to attract International interest.
