Early 20th century mirrors from prolific local manufacture to sell in Wolverhampton

Posted on

A pair of vintage mirrors made by Wolverhampton firm W.S. Laurie’s Glass Works in the 1930s will sell at auction this month, just a few miles from where they were manufactured.

A prolific maker of the early 20th Century, Laurie’s was known globally for its cut glass designs so typical of the period.

The lots in question, which have been consigned for sale in the Friday 28th February Specialist Collectors’ Sale at local auction house Cuttlestones’ Wolverhampton sale room, are no exception. The first, a cut glass plate mirror in the form of a crown with a cast metal orb finial, was produced to commemorate the 1937 coronation of King George VI. Carrying a paper label to the reverse that reads “Guaranteed British Plate Glass and Hand Workmanship Only Obtainable at W.S Lauries Glass Works Wolverhampton” and measuring some 63cm in width, the substantial piece is guided at £700-900.

The second lot is a 1930s mirrored glass photograph fame, complete with contemporary photograph of a baby and ‘Lauries, Wolverhampton’ paper label to reverse. Measuring 48cm x 38 cm it is expected to achieve in the region of £30-50. Wolverhampton Auction Room Manager, Tom Waldron, says:

It’s great to see two such super examples from such a prolific Wolverhampton firm come through the sale room. They’re in great condition and would compliment any eclectic or vintage-inspired interior. When you add their connections to the local area and the fact that this is a globally recognised brand we anticipate a significant amount of interest.

The mirrors will sell at Cuttlestones’ Wolverhampton Auction Rooms on Friday, 28th February 2014.  Viewing will be from 10am – 7pm on Thursday, 27th February and the morning of the sale, with the catalogue available online at from Friday, 21st February. For those unable to attend on the day of the sale, telephone, commission and live internet bidding options are available. For further information call 01902 421985.
