Diverse lots bring in the bids at Cuttlestones’ specialist collectors’ sales…

Posted on

It’s been all systems go for the Cuttlestones team, with no less than four sales in the past three weeks.

Three of these auctions were specialist collectors’ sales; between them covering a diverse and quirky range of collectables ranging from jewellery and watches to stamps, books and ephemera, toys – and even a collection of one-arm bandits and other arcade machines!

In the Specialist Jewellery Auction on 29th May, a single, private collection of jewellery and accessories from British brand Butler & Wilson, split into 55 lots, achieved an impressive total of over £5,200. Other highlights included Lot 58 – a cherry red Faturan amber graduated oval bead necklace that sold for £420 and Lot 88 – a white metal gem set diamond and Citrine necklace which fetched £900, while Lot 117 – an art deco stye sapphire and diamond ring went for £1,300. In the watches section, the highlight was Lot 179 – a Royal Navy divers’ watch by Precista, which sold for £1,400.

The next specialist sale was the Specialist Auction of Books, Stamps and Ephemera on Wednesday 12th June. With an interesting catalogue spanning everything from Victorian postage stamps to mid-century men’s glamour mags and kids’ comics it attracted bidders in the room, on the telephone lines and on the internet. The undoubted star of a strong stamp section was Lot 79 – a single Queen Victoria mint condition rainbow colour trial state 3, which sold for £650. Elsewhere, Lot 211 – a tray of mainly 1950s/60s men’s glamour magazines sold for £550.

The very next day saw the saleroom play host to a specialist Toys, Comics & Collectables Auction – including a private collection of amusement / arcade machines discovered during a local house clearance. In the toys section, the top performer was Lot 431 – a tray of mainly Warcraft items – which sold for £500; while the highlight of the arcade machines collection was Lot 560 – a floor standing Ruffler & Walker four-in-one penny slot machine which went for £1,900. A round-up of some of the most interesting lots across all three sales is below.
