Collection of vintage motorcycles expected to fetch over £50k at auction

Posted on

Staffordshire auction house Cuttlestones has high hopes for a collection of seven motorcycles set to come under the hammer during its Winter Antiques Sale on Thursday 3rd December.

Amassed by a local private collector, it features bikes dating from the late 1940s – the early 1980s, offering lots to like for fans of classic bikes. The star lot is expected to be a 1955 Vincent Series D Rapide Historic model, which could see the hammer fall at between £20,000 – £25,000. Next in the billing is a 1949 Vincent Comet 500 historic motorcycle ‘YFO 277’ estimated at £7,000 – £10,000; while a 1959 BMW R60 historic motorcycle – complete with period sidecar and hard-cased paniers – should achieve £7,000 – £9,000.

Two bikes estimated in the region of £2,000 – £3,000 are a 1960 Royal Enfield Constellation historic motorcycle ‘665 KTU’ and a slightly more modern 1982 Ducati 350 GTV 'JKK 901Y'. A 1978 BMW R60/7 'ROI 2296' should achieve around £1,500 – £2,500; while a partly dis-assembled 1982 Yamaha RD200 'BWD 354Y' could fetch between £300 – £500.

MD and Head Auctioneer at Cuttlestones, Ben Gamble, says:
“We see a fair few motorcycles pass through the saleroom and they perform pretty well, but a collection like this is something else. It was evidently a labour of love for the collector and the bikes include some quite rare examples in great condition. My personal favourite is the 1959 BMW with the sidecar – it looks like something straight out of Heartbeat and you can just imagine its original owner and their partner heading off for picnics in the countryside on their pride and joy.

“We’re sure classic bike fans from all over will have a keen interest in this sale – and the beauty of the online format means we could well see these bikes exceed their estimates and being shipped to international buyers.”

The collection will sell during Cuttlestones’ Winter Antiques auction on Thursday, 3rd December which will take place online as part of COVID safety measures.
