Posted on

A series of first edition James Bond books by Sir Ian Fleming look set to get collectors all ‘shaken and stirred’ when they go under the hammer in Cuttlestones’ Wolverhampton Auction Rooms Specialist Collectors’ Sale on Friday 12th February.

Included in the collection are a number of famous titles, serialised in film since their publication, such as ‘Goldfinger’, ‘Thunderball’, ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’, ‘You Only Live Twice’, ‘Diamonds are Forever’, ‘From Russia with Love’, ‘Moonraker’, ‘For Your Eyes Only’, and more besides.

The books will no doubt catch the attention of collectors given the enduring popularity of the James Bond legacy – evidenced recently by the success of the British spy’s ongoing adventures in the Daniel Craig movies. What distinguishes this collection from more common pieces of related memorabilia is the good condition of the books and that they are all prized first edition copies – as Books and Maps expert at Cuttlestones, Rosie Blackburn, explains:

First edition books of any kind are, of course, wanted above all others by collectors because of their rarity and originality. In the case of the James Bond novels, the most sought after title is undoubtedly the first edition copy of the original story, ‘Casino Royale’. Naturally, the popularity of the films has increased demand for this title, but upon its initial publication only 4,750 copies were printed – and these sold out within a month. At auction today, I would expect a first edition ‘Casino Royale’, in good condition and having its dust Jacket, to fetch anywhere between £10,000 – £15,000. Even without a dust jacket I would anticipate a fee of £2,000-£3,000 being paid.

“While we don’t have a first edition of Casino Royale among the lots in this sale, nearly every other title – including some of the most popular examples – come complete with their original dust jacket. As a result I anticipate considerable interest from collectors on the day of the sale.”

Cuttlestones Specialist Collectors’ Sale will take place at Wolverhampton Auction Rooms on Friday 12th February from 10am. Viewing will be held from 10am – 7pm Thursday 11th February, and from 9am onwards on the day of the sale. The catalogue will be available online via the website www.cuttlestones.co.uk from Friday 5th February. For those unable to attend on the day of the sale, telephone, commission and live internet bidding options are available. For further information please call 01902 421985.
