The old saying “The car’s the star” rang true at Staffordshire auction house Cuttlestones’ last week, when a 1972 E-Type Jaguar discovered in a local barn saw the hammer fall at an impressive £20,000.

The car was consigned as part of a diverse catalogue numbering some 787 lots in the West Midland sale room’s Winter Antique & Collectors Auction which took place on Thursday, 28th November. Having garnered significant interest in the media, the iconic car – which is in need of some serious TLC, having been stored in a barn for over two decades – attracted bidders from across the world via the telephone lines, live online bidding, commission bids and in the room.

Despite interest coming from far and wide, it sold to a car enthusiast based in Newport – just a few miles over the Shropshire boarder. Cuttlestones’ MD and Head Auctioneer, Ben Gamble, explains:

“As soon as we saw this car we knew that we had something special on our hands, and it has been an honour to sell it on behalf of the vendor to a new owner who will cherish it. We regularly sell and ship lots to a global audience of bidders – and with a car of such iconic status the world was literally its oyster. I must say it’s particularly satisfying to know that it won’t be going far, and I hope to glimpse it out and about on the road when it’s been restored to its former glory.”

Lots selling alongside the E-Type Jaguar included an impressive collection of watches – a Gent’s stainless steel Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner wristwatch sold for £7,500; jewellery, silver, clocks, paintings, antique furniture and more. The full sale results are published here.

Cuttlestones is now taking consignments for 2025 auctions at its sale room in Penkridge, between Stafford and Wolverhampton – for a free, no obligation valuation send photos via WhatsApp to 07949 603872, email valuations@cuttlestones.co.uk or call 01785 714905 to make an appointment.
