Auction of local wine cellar draws bidders from far & wide

Staffordshire auction house Cuttlestones’ recent specialist wine auction, arranged in conjunction with Andrew Wilson of Tittensor’s Old School Wines, generated considerable interest; not only local but from internet bidders both home and abroad. In the first sale of its kind hosted by the Staffordshire auction house an impressive catalogue, consisting over 200 lots, came under the hammer; the majority of which originated from a single, large cellar and the contents of two smaller cellars being sold on behalf of local vendors.

The large cellar was of particular Staffordshire interest, having been collated by a local gentleman who worked as a warehouse manager at Joule’s brewery in Stone. Consisting of around 300 bottles including fine and rare vintages of Claret, Sauternes, Burgundy, Vintage Port and Vintage Cognac alongside rare Joule’s Commemorative Ales there were some real gems from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Star lots included a single bottle of CHATEAU MARGAUX (1959) 1ER GRAND CRU CLASSE on which the hammer fell at an impressive £480; a bottle of CHATEAU LAFITE-ROTHSCHILD (1958) which achieved £280; a bottle of CHATEAU LATOUR (1966) which sold for £280 and a bottle of 1904 GRANDE CHAMPAGNE COGNAC ‘VERRIERES’ which went for £250.

The Joules ales and memorabilia also sold well, with one bottle of JOULES ‘SPECIAL BREW’ VICTORY ALE (1946) selling for £55; a bottle of JOULES SPECIAL ROYAL ALE which achieved £50; a quantity of Joules memorabilia, which sold for £22 and a Joules pub jug at £18.

Other highlights included a bottle of PRUNIER VINTAGE 1922 RESERVE COGNAC at £180 and six bottles of assorted brandy for £240.

We had some very good results throughout the sale with a number of lots shattering their estimates.
