Stafford executions list sparks social media storm – and sells to local bidder

Antique document listing executions, sold for £170.

A quirky printed list charting executions at Stafford between 1793 and 1907 – offered as part of a lot featuring other execution-related ephemera – has sold at Cuttlestones Auctioneers for £170 to a local bidder from Uttoxeter.

The lot, which caused quite a stir on social media in the run-up to the sale, detailed over a century of capital punishments carried out in Stafford. The first entry dated from 1793, recording the executions of Betley and Ellis of Biddulph for the murder of Mr Ward of Yarlet, while the last two entries marked executions in 1907.

The document drew significant local interest thanks to its gruesome content – recording not only names and crimes but also mishaps on the scaffold, as well as the inclusion of notorious figures such as Dr William Palmer, the infamous “Rugeley Poisoner.”

Ben Gamble, MD and Head Auctioneer at Cuttlestones, says:
“It’s always particularly exciting when an item of local historical interest comes under the hammer, and this executions list was a prime example. The attention it generated ahead of the sale shows how strongly people connect with their local heritage – even when it’s a darker chapter of history.”
