A diverse array of fine and collectable lots saw enthusiastic bidding at our recent Spring Antique & Collectors’ Auction held at our Penkridge saleroom. From mid-century artworks to vintage collectables, coins, silverware – and even a classic moped – the sale drew strong interest from bidders both online and in person. Here are some of the standout lots that stole the show throughout the diverse catalogue…

Artworks & prints prove popular
Art enthusiasts were treated to an impressive selection, with works by some noted artists – and a retro icon – fetching strong prices.

  • Lot 3AFTER PABLO PICASSO (1881-1973), ‘Seated Model of a King’, an unsigned coloured lithograph on paper from an edition of 1500, framed and glazed, achieved a hammer price of £600.
  • Lot 17VLADIMIR TRETCHIKOFF (1913-2006), ‘Chinese Girl’, a mid-century print on board, well-surpassing its estimate of £40-£60 to hammer at £140.
  • Lot 18VLADIMIR TRETCHIKOFF (1913-2006), ‘Miss Wong’, another mid-century print on board, edged slightly higher, selling for £150.
  • Lot 55L. VERNON (XX), ‘Study of a West Highland Terrier’, a signed oil on canvas, drew strong competition and hammered at £250.

Collectors’ items command strong interest
Rare and nostalgic collectables – including some less ‘conventional’ lots – proved highly sought-after, with several exceeding pre-sale expectations.

  • Lot 101An original Pokémon hardback folder containing approx. 150 Pokémon cards, including a complete base set, smashed its £50-£100 estimate, hammering at an astounding £1,000.
  • Lot 129A collection of twenty pop music tour/concert programmes, featuring The Who, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, and other iconic rock acts, fetched £250.
  • Lot 130A collection of over thirty-five pop music tour/concert programmes, including The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, and Genesis, saw the hammer fall at £210.
  • Lot 215A vintage gentleman’s Grana military wristwatch, stamped W.W.W. M3196, achieved a solid £320.
  • Lot 223A George VI 1825 sovereign, reached an impressive £1,900.
  • Lot 224A William IV 1834 half sovereign, fetched £900.

Silverware shines bright
Silverware collectors were again out in force, with several lots commanding strong bidding.

  • Lot 273A hallmarked silver Campagna urn-style twin-handled wine cooler by John Watson & Son (Sheffield, 1838), sold for £2,500.
  • Lot 274A fine hallmarked silver twin-handled wine cooler by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd (London, 1901), realised £1,700.
  • Lot 275A stylish and impressive hallmarked silver six-piece tea and coffee service, a matched set with pieces dating from 1931 and 1932, hammered at £3,200.
  • Lot 300A hallmarked silver twin-handled serving tray by Walker & Hall (Sheffield, 1919), achieved £1,700.
  • Lot 302A canteen of contemporary designer hallmarked silver cutlery by Paul Harrison (London, 1971), reached £2,000.


Furniture, decorative arts & curiosities

Strong demand was evident across an eclectic mix of furniture and decorative arts – including a former star of the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow and some local gems from the Coalport factory…

  • Lot 320A brass church eagle lectern, originally filmed for Antiques Roadshow in 2012, soared past its £300-£500 estimate, hammering at £750.
  • Lot 358Sixty-two assorted Victorian and later tiles, including Art Nouveau and Delft examples, sold for £290.
  • Lot 360S. Melani, a French Art Deco bust of a young lady looking skyward, achieved £120.
  • Lot 369A jewelled Coalport cup and saucer, featuring turquoise jewelling on a gilt background, realised £320.
  • Lot 370A jewelled Coalport cabinet cup and saucer, with an indistinct Bailey, Banks & Biddle stamp, also hammered at £320.

Fine Wines, spirits & luxury items
Vintage wines and commemorative silver had the bidders out in force, with the enduring appeal of items relating to the ill-fated Royal marriage of Chales & Diana once again in evidence…

  • Lot 334A bottle of Porto Krohn Colheita de 1970, realised £95.
  • Lot 335A bottle of Graham’s Malvedos 1965 Vintage Port, exceeded expectations at £150.
  • Lot 606A Mappin & Webb commemorative silver desk clock (38/210), celebrating the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana, secured £850.

Classic & vintage finds continue to impress
Quirky, rare, and nostalgic pieces rounded off the highlights of this sale, including an impressive Victorian desk and that classic vintage moped…

  • Lot 633A Victorian burr walnut piano-top Davenport desk, drew considerable interest, achieving £700.
  • Lot 644A 19th-century cast water feature, featuring a cherub and swans, commanded £850.
  • Lot 646A part-restored 1967 Raleigh Runabout Model RM6 moped, a unique addition to the auction, sold for £400.
