Gaming is big business – not child’s play – at auction!

vintage gaming consoles and computer games

Auctions may be traditionally associated with antiques, but did you know that the relatively modern phenomenon of video gaming has also generated its very own community of avid collectors?

Now ‘vintage’ gaming consoles and computer games dating from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and beyond can command significant sums. This is partly due to the fact that gaming tech continues to develop at dizzying speed, with both consoles and gaming formats rapidly becoming defunct and outdated. As gamers vie to invest in the latest tech, older examples were often either discarded or stored away and forgotten. But did you know that Nintendo 64 with its collection of cartridges, Sony Playstation or Sega Megadrive that’s languishing in the loft could be worth cold, hard cash?

Nostalgic Gen X and Millennial collectors as well as Gen Z retro fans are all keen to get their hands on vintage games consoles – and the games to play on them. As ever, condition is key to value – original boxes and consoles and games in working order naturally command the highest prices. Scarcity can also impact value – as we recently saw in our Staffordshire auction room.

The undoubted star was a vintage Nintendo Donkey Kong JR handheld game and watch (DJ-101 1982) which, in its original box, saw the hammer fall at £110. Other lots that performed well recently include:

  • A cased Nintendo super NES console game and controllers – Hammer price £160
  • A vintage Nintendo entertainment system NES version with games and accessories – Hammer Price £90 (pictured)
  • A Nintendo 64 games console, games and accessories – Hammer price £200
  • A vintage PlayStation together with PS3 games, Xbox 360 games etc – Hammer Price £50

Got a vintage PlayStation, Nintendo or Xbox console that’s surplus to requirement? Or maybe a collection of classic games gathering dust?
