Musical lots hit the high notes during March Specialist Collectors’ Sale

Friday, 26 March, 2021

Several lots linked to music were among the top performers at our online Specialist Collectors’ Sale on Friday, 19th May.

Running out of the Wolverhampton sale room, the catalogue boasted some 411 lots representing a diverse range of niche collectables, and attracted over 500 bidders across the two online platforms. Bidders proved to be in earnest, with some 85% of lots selling to countries including China, Canada and the US.

The top seller came in the form of Lot 317, a Henri Selmer alto saxophone dated 1962 and engraved "Selmer, New York, Elkhart, London, Made In France, R" M99689. Complete with fitted, locking case and accessories it saw the hammer fall at £3,500. Earlier, another saxophone, this time Lot 314 – an Adolphe "1ER Grand Prix De La Facture Instrumentale Medaille D'Or 1900, Adolphe SAX, 84 Rue Myrha, Paris, No. 434” again with fitted case and accessories went for £600.

And the musical theme didn’t end there, with the legendary Beatles linking two of the other star lots. These included Lot 237 – a note from John Lennon’s ‘Aunt Mimi’ responding to an adoring fan’s request for the star’s signature. Sent from Lennon’s childhood home, 251 Menlove Avenue, Woolton, L'Pool 25, it reads "Dear Vivienne Thanks for letter. There are two thousand requests, its impossible for me to grant one without the other. John saw my mail & nearly collapsed with fright, but sends love to you, Best Wishes Mimi Smith". Complete with an envelope that had been stamped and addressed by the recipient – postmarked for 10th Dec 1963, the letter hails from early in the band’s career, when Beatlemania was on the rise and the band were set to conquer the US. Attracting significant interest from fans worldwide due to its rarity, the note sold for an impressive £1,300 to a bidder from London.

Hot on its heels, Lot 240, a collection of 32 Beatles LPs in a case and including some of the band’s most enduring albums alongside singles and Greatest Hits collections, saw the hammer fall at £550.

Other highlights presented a pretty mixed bag – including Lot 356, a tray of assorted vintage magic lantern parts and associated accessories, which fetched £1,100, while Lot 80 – a British Army other ranks khaki tunic, with KSLI badges and general service buttons; cap and various items of webbing sold for £750.

Photographic equipment also brought in the bids, with a collection of various photographic items and accessories consigned by a local collector split into 57 lots going on to achieve a total hammer price of £7,133; despite a number of items being in relatively poor order. Highlights from within the collection included Lot 342 – a tray of assorted photographic equipment, including and Aldis projector, on which the hammer fall at £600 and Lot 352, a tray of assorted photographic lenses and accessories, which went for £400.

In the toy section Lot 277 – an original 1930s Meccano tin plate racing car, boasting cream body with red trim and with its driver intact - went for a hefty £550.

One of the sale’s biggest sleepers, meanwhile, was Lot 256 - a Black Forest carved and painted wood figure of a skier which fetched £500 against its estimate of £30-50.
