Sale report: Wolverhampton Antiques & Interiors - Wed 17th Feb 2021
Monday, 22 February, 2021
Our second February sale, live online from Wolverhampton, boasted a catalogue of 550 lots offering pretty much something for everyone. Sections covered pictures, mirrors, collectables, silver, ceramics, jewellery, watches, tools, electrical goods, garden effects – including mowers – and furniture. This diverse mix attracted some 575 registered online bidders with interest strong across the sections, and 95% of lots selling.
Early on, the paintings and mirrors section offered up two particular star lots – Lot 17, a famed set of pen & ink drawings by famed cartoonist Norman Thelwell, featuring carolling children in various comic scenes rather than the equestrian characters with which his work is synonymous, fetched an impressive £550. Lot 33, an early 20thC oil on canvas depicting ‘The House at the Edge of the Wood’, presented in a gilt frame and signed by British artist Arthur de Breanski, saw the hammer fall at £650.
The popularity of ‘chintzy’ tea sets looks set to continue, with Lot 93, a pretty art deco Shelley tea set decorated with blue flowers selling for £190 despite some chips and general wear. Perhaps the biggest ‘sleeper’ of the sale was Lot 174 – a box of assorted pens, wrist watches and other bits and bobs including a clothes brush and a keyring, which caused something of a bidding frenzy before it sold for £650.
When it comes to collectables, they don’t get much more niche than Robert Harrop’s PG Tips chimp figurines. However, with private collection of the figures, all boxed and in excellent condition, split into four lots in this sale we certainly reached the right audience. Two lots in particular caused a stir – Lot 24, eight boxed Robert Harrop PG Tips chimp figures along with a related booklet which sold for £170; and Lot 233 – two boxed Robert Harrop PG Tips chimp tableaus – which fetched £280.
In the furniture section, a retro G-Plan dressing table sideboard saw the trend for mid-Century furniture continue; selling for £270 – however, perhaps more surprisingly, traditional furniture also performed well. Lot 654, an Edwardian hall coat stand, and Lot 655; a Victorian mahogany bookcase secretaire saw the hammer fall at £220 and £300 respectively. The star of the sale, however, was a large antique haberdashery unit which sold for an impressive £1,300.
