Chance to snap up a Banksy or a Barnes as British art goes under the hammer in March

Monday, 01 March, 2021

As part of its Spring Antiques sale, Staffordshire auction house Cuttlestones will see some great pieces of British modern art pass through its Penkridge saleroom. In addition to a piece by lauded guerilla artist Banksy, the catalogue includes a collection of seven oil paintings by David Barnes, renowned for his modern take on Welsh landscapes.

Banksy himself will need little introduction; his street art causing a media storm wherever it appears and commanding significant sums – indeed, a recently removed installation of a hula hooping girl painted onto a wall in Nottingham has just sold for six figures. The piece set to sell in Staffordshire this March is unlikely to reach such dizzy heights – being a framed mixed media piece entitled 'Walled Off Hotel Box Set' and comprising a lithograph in colours on paper with concrete relief formed by an original piece of the graffiti-sprayed wall an original piece of the separation wall that divides Israel and Palestine, along with a Walled Off Hotel invoice. Carrying a guide price of £300-500 it brings the chance to own an original Banksy within the realms of possibility for most fans.

The David Barnes paintings, meanwhile, have been consigned from a single, private collection and capture the North Welsh landscape in his trademark contemporary style. Born in Africa in 1943, David followed a career path as an accountant and academic, while maintaining a keen interest in painting and art collecting. However, it was not until he retired in 2006 that he began painting seriously; drawing inspiration from the Welsh artists including Kyffin Williams and the brooding landscapes and sombre colours of the North Wales landscape. David quickly developed his own, distinctive style; finding a niche and rapidly became successful with his bold, modern landscapes, many of which feature the mountains of Snowdonia and the coastline of north Wales and Anglesey.

The seven Barnes paintings consigned in this sale are all oil on board, signed verso and presented in black frames. Examples include ‘Near Lake Ogwen’ (29 x 39 cm) which carries an estimate of £200-300; ‘On the West Coast’ (29 x 39 cm), estimated £200-300 and ‘At the head of the pass’ (29 x 24 cm), expected to achieve £150-250. Head Auctioneer, Ben Gamble, says:

“People may be surprised to hear that we have modern art passing through the saleroom, but we get some great 20th and 21st century pieces passing through regularly. If you’re looking to invest in modern British art, names don’t come much bigger than Banksy and this is a great chance to snap up a piece at a pretty affordable price. David Barnes is also a great artist to follow. His works are modern in style but accessible; they look great in contemporary interiors – in fact, I have several of his paintings myself – and there is quite a collectors community building around his works.”

The Banksy and David Barnes artworks are set to go under the hammer during Cuttlestones’ online Spring Antiques Auction on Thursday, 11th March. The fully illustrated catalogue will be available online from Friday 5th March and bidders can either bid live online via the-saleroom.com or easyliveauction.com; by leaving a commission bid or on the telephone.
