Bidders ‘on the grid’ as rare child’s Jomoro racing car looks set to fetch £4,000 - £8,000 at auction

Monday, 31 August, 2020

Imagine being a child and waking up on Christmas morning to find a 2/3 scale ready-to-race model of a classic Formula 1 car under the tree – the stuff of dreams, right? Well, it seems for one lucky youngster that dream could well become reality, as a vintage Jomoro child’s racing car is set to come under the hammer at Staffordshire auction house Cuttlestones next week, carrying an estimate of between £4,000 - £8,000.

Launched in 1971 and aimed at the children of the very wealthy elite due to its hefty price tag, the Jomoro was sometimes referred to as the 'Mighty Microbe'. An estimated 60 were planned, all individually numbered – and it is one of these 60 that is set to sell next week. MD and Head Auctioneer at Cuttlestones, Ben Gamble, says:

“Opportunities don’t come much rarer than this – we know that a maximum of 60 of these cars were produced, and it’s unknown how many of them survive. They certainly don’t come up for sale very often! The example in question has been in storage for approximately 40 years, the bodywork appears in good order and all metal components have been greased on a regular basis.

“As befits something of this rarity, we’re anticipating huge interest – toy collectors, formula one enthusiasts, wealthy parents and individuals who may have dreamed of owning one of these cars as a child and now have the means to make that dream come true are all likely to jostle for a piece of the bidding action. It is likely to attract a global audience of bidders and, as such, while the lot carries a considerable estimate the sky could be the limit on this one.”

The car will go under the hammer during Cuttlestones’ Autumn Antiques Auction on Thursday 3rd September and, with the online only action streamed live to bidders the world over via the-saleroom.com and easyliveauction.com. In addition to live online bids, commission and telephone bids will also be accepted. Viewing is by appointment only the day prior to the sale.
The full lot description will appear in the illustrated online catalogue from Friday, 28th August at https://cuttlestones.co.uk/salecatalogue/FA030920.htm. Any queries relating to the lot should be directed to office@cuttlestones.co.uk or by calling 01785 714905.
