Staffordshire auction house Cuttlestones, which has salerooms in both Penkridge and Wolverhampton, is set to expand its calendar of online auctions in the wake of Covid-19. The move follows the success of the auctioneer’s first ever online-only sale on Friday 22nd May, which saw a private coin collection auctioned off to achieve an impressive total in excess of £60k.
The firm, which sees some 25,000 lots pass through its salerooms each year, was an early adopter of live online bidding and offers the feature for all of its sales. The move to online-only sales is part of the firm’s response to social distancing guidelines and will become the ‘new norm’ until restrictions are relaxed and it is safe to welcome bidders back into the saleroom in person.
The first of the new online auctions will be a Home and Antique sale based at the Penkridge saleroom on Friday 29th May at 10am, featuring a packed catalogue of lots postponed from its original sale date of 25th March. The fully illustrated catalogue is available to view online, and bidders can register to bid live online – and even watch the auction in progress – via easyliveauction.com and thesaleroom.com. Purchased lots can either be posted our couriered to successful bidders or collection can be arranged by appointment with full social distancing measures in place.
The auction house will then run its fortnightly Wednesday Home and Antique auctions online from its Penkridge saleroom from 10th June. The online summer calendar will also include monthly Antique & Interiors auctions from Wolverhampton auction rooms from Wednesday 15th July. MD and Head auctioneer, Ben Gamble, says:
“We’re well accustomed to online bidding in our sales – in fact online bids make up a significant proportion of our sales are we ship lots internationally. However, the challenges of COVID-19 and keeping our staff and customers safe have made us take this a step further. We’ve taken time out to work out how best to operate in this new climate and we are now looking forward to putting the plan into action, We have some fantastic lots consigned for sale and have had regular enquiries from both trade and public bidders keen to invest in new items. Our priority, however, remains everyone’s health and safety so we will continue to closely monitor Government advice and follow guidelines accordingly.”
