A trio of First World War medals awarded to a young soldier from Tipton are set to go under the hammer at Cuttlestones’ Specialist Collectors’ Sale this Friday 20th March.

The set, presented in their original cardboard box, include a Star Medal, Victory Medal and Bravery Medal awarded to Private Thomas Sutton - 17803 - C. Company of 7th battalion South Staffs regiment. He was killed in action on 14th December, 1917 aged 24. He is buried in grave XX.D.5 at Loos British Cemetary, Loos, Pas de Calais, France. The medals are expected to achieve in the region of £400-600, as Cuttlestones’ Rosie Blackburn explains:

“WWI medals always attract significant interest – there’s a large community of specialist collectors out there. Medal sets with provenance – a name and a history of how the medals were achieved, plus the medals’ own rarity all impact price, and in this case, with the links to the Black Country, we anticipate additional interest in Private Sutton’s medals from those with an interest in local history and the fact he was awarded a Bravery Medal posthumously for the ultimate sacrifice.”

The medals are included within a packed catalogue for the Friday, 20th March Specialist Collectors’ Sale. The fully illustrated catalogue is available to view online at www.cuttlestones.co.uk and viewing in the saleroom will take place on Thursday 19th March from 10am – 7pm. Live online, telephone and commission bidding options are available.
