Don’t throw out that mid-century furniture – it could be worth selling at auction!

Don’t throw out that mid-century furniture – it could be worth selling at auction!

Friday, 01 November, 2019

With high-street giants like John Lewis stocking the latest designs from classic names such as G-Plan, Utility and Ercol, savvy buyers are heading to the auction rooms to pick up bargain pieces – meaning that furniture that 5 or 10 years ago would have barely been worth double figures is now fetching hundreds of pounds.

Ben Gamble, MD and Head Auctioneer of Cuttlestones, which has sale rooms in both Penkridge and Wolverhampton, explains the trend:

“The understated style of these pieces would, a few years ago, have seemed terribly dated – but they’re back with a vengeance as the designs are very in-keeping with the pared-back, contemporary design of modern homes. When you add that new pieces from some of the key designers – particularly Ercol and G-Plan – cost in the thousands, buyers are heading to auction to find vintage examples; meaning they get the designer name and quality without the price tag.

“From a seller’s perspective, this means that Granny’s Ercol dining room table and chairs, which you inherited but don’t really like, could be sold on to free up the cash to buy you a dining set you prefer. We’ve now got a waiting list of people interested in good quality mid-century modern pieces, so it really is worth bringing them in for valuation.”

Examples of this type that have recently sold through Cuttlestones’ saleroom include a G-Plan teak vintage sideboard, which fetched £350; a Ladderax teak vintage bookcase system which sold for £480; a McIntosh rosewood dining table & four chairs on which the hammer fell at £500 and an Ercol light elm sideboard, which saw a winning bid of £280.
